From a merchant statement
Also billed as Dispute fee.
What is a chargeback fee?
A per-case charge when a cardholder disputes a transaction and the issuing bank claws the money back. It bills at the moment the dispute opens, on top of losing the disputed amount, and on most accounts it is not returned even if you win the case.
Who charges it and why
The card networks and the acquiring side run a real dispute process with real case handling, so a cost exists underneath. The processor sets the merchant-facing amount, and the spread between the underlying cost and the billed line is where the markup lives.
What fair looks like
Fair looks like a case charge that tracks the actual handling cost, disclosed up front, with the outcome of the dispute reflected in what you pay. It also looks like a processor that helps you fight the dispute rather than just billing it.
Can you get rid of it
You cannot remove the dispute process, but you can reduce the cases: clear billing descriptors, prompt refunds, and delivery evidence prevent most of them. On the fee itself, ask what the charge covers and whether won cases are credited; the answer tells you how the line is priced.
